Oblivion

Film Review | Oblivion

Apr 22, 2013 by Rip

Oblivion is centered on some future version of Earth which has been laid waste due to the destruction of the moon by an invading force from the depths of space. A seemingly ageless Tom Cruise (this guy is really 50+ years old?!) plays the part of a janitor of sorts, keeping a network of security drones functional while preparing to leave Earth for humanity’s new home – Titan.

The film begins to hint all is not quite as it seems and the story weaves left and right, finally taking a shocking step sideways where the ground under the viewers feet slips dramatically. I caught the film on IMAX and based on the grand vistas and exceptional CGI, I believe the experience was worth every penny. The camera work was also exceptionally well executed with some nifty tilt-shift effects along with perfect lighting adding to the depth and drama.

Oblivion is a well-crafted film with a tightly woven plot. Combined with plenty of action, amazing technological mastery along with a compelling story and almost perfect direction, I thoroughly enjoyed the film on IMAX and would gladly pay to see it again. I would rate the film an easy 8 of 10, which could easily turn into a 9 should the mood strike me. Very well done.

// Why?

Before I answer why, let’s talk about the rules. Here, I chatter about unimportant things. I stay in the shallow end of the pool, speculating on pop culture fascination, the journey of Liverpool FC, while offering an opinion or two on gaming. Why? Because I enjoy the written word. There is both a precision and also freedom with its balance, flow, and elegance. And this corner of the Internet offers a place to dabble in topics which avoid anything with a fuse.
