I’m late to the game with this review but, honestly, this particular film is difficult to categorize. Of what do I speak? Well, the title should give it away but for those not paying attention, we’re chatting about Deadpool.
Starring Ryan Reynolds of Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place (kidding, kinda), the Deadpool film is hits many classic buttons in many categories. Billed as a production from the Marvel rubber-stamp factory, this film threatened to be another telling of the same story we’ve seen many times before in Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and the Avengers. The story?! Yeah, it’s mayhem, chaos, a sprinkling of superhero angst, some civilian collateral damage combined with a breathless “save the human race” conclusion. Yawn.
But wait, Deadpool is different – in an exceptional way.
Yup, Deadpool is a superhero and, sure, he has some unique powers but what makes this film so unique and shockingly entertaining is the tongue-in-cheek action and the rib-cracking, laugh-out-loud moments. In fact, I don’t remember seeing any film which made me laugh so much in a long time. Why so funny? Easy: a fabulous script combined with an exceptional protagonist. Much like Robert Downey Jr. plays the ideal Tony Stark, Ryan Reynolds seizes the role of Deadpool with bemused perfection.
Did you know that Deadpool is the only comic book character who knows he’s in a comic book? In other words, Deadpool is self-aware and chats directly to the reader. Well, in a stroke of genius, the film production mirrors that unique trait and Deadpool speaks directly to the audience — typically with a smile-inducing quip.
The only downside to Deadpool is debatable: this film is just dirty. No, not in a crusted ick with rotting detritus kinda way. No, I mean in a dirty sexy kinda way. Which means don’t plan on watching this film with anyone who is slightly sheltered or introverted — because that person will run from the room blushing furiously. Morena Baccarin, who plays Reynolds love interest in the film, only adds her sultry chemistry to an already exotic mix.
Edgy, quick-witted, and a thoroughly entertaining experience, Deadpool is a refreshing take on a standard superhero production. From where I sit, there is a wealth of comedic ingenuity woven perfectly into the Marvel tapestry. Deadpool is a worthy addition to the franchise and, even after seeing this film twice in the theater, I purchased this Blu-ray day one. Absolutely Stupendous.
