Sometimes one cannot attend the theater to watch a film and thus a quick borrow from a friend, or perhaps even a purchase enables viewing. The pundits were mixed on Man of Steel thus I considered a rental but friends and family insisted this was a film worth owning. So be it. I plunked down a couple of bucks and bought the Blu-ray, can I take that decision back? Not that Man of Steel is a bad film; far from it. No, Man of Steel is simply good but not great. With an opening sequence which captures the imagination and a middle story which more formalizes the Superman character — however, and this is a big however (and *spoiler alert*) Clarke’s father claims he is keeping his son’s identity concealed because he doesn’t want the world to freak out and go into social and religious hysteria when they realize Clarke is from another planet. But late in the film when General Zod turns up, broadcasts his demands for Superman, the human population doesn’t go into fits of concern, social outrage, or entertain the thought “we are not alone.” No, they simply default into a very matter-of-fact, “Oh, there’s an alien here? Turn his ass over pronto!” You could almost see the metaphorical yawn. And don’t get me started on the final fight sequence. Boom, crash, bang…spindle, break, mutilate…but it barely entertained. Not dark enough. Far from cohesive enough. A good but should have been great film. Rated a 6 of 10 because it should have been more worthy of my time (and money).
