Canon vs Nikon | Full Frame dSLR

Feb 14, 2013 by Rip

Since I’ve been participating in the Flickr Project 365 circa 2013, I found the desire to improve my skills and equipment quite pressing. I’ve been using a Nikon D90, a crop-sensor camera, so the next logical step up was a full-frame. However, full-frame cameras have traditionally been very, very expensive. As luck would have it, both Nikon and Canon introduced an entry level full-frame camera in late 2012.

Naturally, my gaze turned to Nikon because I was moderately invested in the Nikon line with a few tasty lenses (including the incredible 50mm f/1.4D) but I wasn’t really committed. When I began doing research on the Nikon D600, I found references, complaints, and concern over an issue with sensor dust. Based on research, videos, and empirical documents, the camera seems to have a manufacturing flaw — so bad, in fact, Nikon is actually offering free sensor cleaning to anyone complaining about the problem. Not a good sign so I considered switching my brand to Canon.

The 6D is Canon’s full-frame offering and it has some significant differences (both disadvantages and advantages) over the Nikon product. Fast focus, amazing low-light capability, and simple ergonomics interested me. The final decision was made when I saw BestBuy had a kit for sale which included a 24-105 f/4 L IS USM lens. Normally, kit lenses are slow, ponderous and crap (quickly sold on Craigslist or eBay for a pittance) but Canon decided to pair a great, mid-range, high-quality L glass zoom lens with the 6D and I was sold.

I’ve been rocking the Canon now for about a month and I’ve been stunned at the image quality and low-light ability. It took me a while to become accustomed to the very different shutter noise (which is a design choice by Canon) but now it is normal. I have to say the 24-105 f/4 kit lens has been a fabulous introduction to the professional L series and I’ve pulled the trigger on a couple more L branded lenses because the glass is just that good.

I have zero regrets about shifting from Nikon to Canon. I love the ergonomics of the 6D, how easily setting changes, speed of zoom, the available lenses, and the overall look and feel. Canon, for my money, is allowing me to take some pretty amazing shots, to improve my skills, and enjoy the moment more and more. Allow me to offer the following shots, taken by yours truly, as a testament to the camera’s abilities.

Liverpool’s Goalkeeper scores winner in 95th minute with season on line. Incredible sporting moment that almost cracks chill of my cold blue heart. Allison lost his father at the end of February. What emotions he must have experienced in this second 🙌🇧🇷

Absolutely incredible.
Another “moment” in Reds history. We go again but need a hand getting over the line. C’mon Leicester! https://t.co/T5VwD1uKRT

.@Speechify_audio Was interested but the price point ($12/month) for premium is just too high. Unfortunately, the free voices pale in comparison. Great concept, may return if/when price drops.

// Why?

Before I answer why, let’s talk about the rules. Here, I chatter about unimportant things. I stay in the shallow end of the pool, speculating on pop culture fascination, the journey of Liverpool FC, while offering an opinion or two on gaming. Why? Because I enjoy the written word. There is both a precision and also freedom with its balance, flow, and elegance. And this corner of the Internet offers a place to dabble in topics which avoid anything with a fuse.
