So, as you know, I’ve been enjoying my iPhone G3 since purchase. I’ve been thrilled at the ability to GPS yourself anywhere, to use apps for this and that — but truth be told, when it all comes down to it, I just want a couple of things out of a smartphone: the ability to make calls, and the ability to take a snapshot now and again.
Since switching from Verizon to AT&T, I’ve experience a significant number of dropped calls. A significant number. I would say at least one a day, and I’ve had as many as three in the same half-hour conversation. Three times. ‘Effin’ rediculous. I’ve heard some palather about the problems of the G3 since its release and I have faithfully updated any software through the itunes interface…. but I continue getting these lousy disconnects, cannot find recipient, and all circuits are busy. It has started to become … maddening.
I was talking to a friend and he said the Blackberry Bold remains on the AT&T interface but, after using the iPhone, he thinks the Bold is far superior. He likes the ability to text more readily. The plan is cheaper, and it seems more intuitive to him. Very interesting. I’m not above switching phones but the perfect situation allows me to try out the phone and see what is up.
So I stroll into the mall AT&T store and see what’s up. I introduce myself as a slightly disgruntled character, looking for an iPhone fix. I swear she just clicked into this rehearsed bit about AT&T having the best network, that AT&T has excellent phones, and no one else in the store has the same problems. I shrug and mention the Bold has my attention and perhaps it a better phone. A third guy jumped in and said he just left the iPhone for the Bold and has not nothing but trouble. Huh. I replied, how does your experience have anything to do with my experience? I’m telling you, I drop call all the time. Then they started telling me the network was still being built in this area and I should just turn off my 3G speeds and only run 3G when I’m surfing the net. Excuse me?
I walked out of that store, shaking my head thinking those guys were idiots, simply pulling the party line, and getting paid to be cheer leaders. I wanted a fix, not some limber girls with pom-poms. The real pisser is if I do end up switching phones, I’ll end up with an iPhone 3G paperweight. Nice. So I’m still left wondering about the Storm.
