Was browsing through the recent release PC gaming titles and noticed Halo 2 finally made it to the desktop. The first one was great fun, and although the graphics were moderately flat, the game was pretty good online. I said “pretty good.” As I was perusing the screenshots, I noticed, in BIG print, “Requires Windows Vista to play” and I got that sinking feeling.
Yeah, of course, it is because the game is coded in DX10, which requires the Vista codecs to play. But this is the first time I’ve seen a game on the shelf that I cannot play because I’ve not yet adopted the Vista OS in any of its many incarnations. Something I don’t want to do for a while — at least until Service Pack 1 comes out — but I may have to rethink that stance if more and more products are released requiring the Vista OS.
Bummer.
