Congratulations to the Texas Longhorns and Vince Young for pulling out an impressive, though not overwhelming, win against USC. The National Championship title belongs in Texas and the state couldn’t be happier. But pundits are asking, “Is Vince Young an NFL quarterback?
Many have jumped on the bandwagon and anointed Young as a better version of Michael Vick. He’s taller, shows better poise and is more accurate but we’re talking about the transition to the best-of-the-best league. The crème of the crop where Urlacher and Spikes lurk behind the defensive line, waiting for a scrambling QB to break for the open. The place where spot passing and looking off safeties is a paramount skill. A place where the entire field moves as quickly as he did in the collegiate ranks.
Vince Young is like a man among boys on the collegiate field and has earned his rightful place in history with his record breaking performance during the National Championship game.
However …
I’m calling it right now. Vince Young will not succeed in the National Football League. There are too many things wrong with his motion, his presence, his speed, and his overall ability. A solid athlete? Most definitely. Able to run an NFL offense? Nah.
